You can always grow more

I walked into the office kitchen today, where one of my coworkers was heating up her lunch.

“It’s the last of the broccoli soup,” she said. “From the last of the broccoli.”

Just last week we’d been talking about broccoli and its nature, the single big head it grows, and then, once that’s gone, the little secondary heads that grow in its wake. This particular coworker said she like the secondary heads better—they tasted sweeter.

I’ve never grown broccoli, but it seems like this area is the perfect climate for it, so if I get my hoped-for plot, that may have to be a crop that goes into the rotation.

“You can always grow more,” I said before leaving the kitchen.

“That’s right,” she said.

It’s just one of the aspects of gardening that is so freaking great.

We’ll all be heartbroken if you don’t get a garden this year. When will you know?

So true. it seems like just about the time you’re getting sick of something that crops finished and a new one is coming on. The joys of eating seasonally.

Lydia, I’m not sure — I think Oakland has a deadline that’s coming up pretty soon for anyone who had a garden last year to re-up. Once that happens, they assign out the unused plots. So…we’ll see!

Chiot’s Run, that is what I love about eating seasonally, too.

Although my parents were both great gardeners and I come from a long line of farmers on both sides of my family, I am a complete gardening novice! I grew lots of things in containers in Sicily, but I didn’t have to work very hard at it because anything you stick in dirt will grow like crazy on that island! Anyway, now that we bought a house and we have a bit of a yard to call our own, we’re thinking of building some raised beds and starting a real garden! Expect some e-mails. :-)

Our plan is to go through our garden books this weekend. Start making notes and creating our dream gardens. I’m hoping that it will make it feel at least a little warmer than the outside looks.

Nicole, I’m happy to help out! (Although trust me…I’m not kidding with the name of my blog…) I think raised beds are a great idea — allows you to really control the dirt — and once they’re in, they’re easy to maintain. I think.

Ree, is this an annual ritual? I definitely think dreaming of the garden to come is a great way to get through the Midwestern winter. Which is awful. I’m just sayin’.
