Thrilled to be here

On Friday night, as The Mint Killer and I arrived home from the VIP Preview of the Slow Food Nation Taste Pavilion, I checked my mail and found my California driver’s license. This is the only state in which I have ever lived where you have to wait for the license to arrive by mail. This means you have no non-hole-punched, actual-and-valid photo ID until they get around to said mailing.

This is what led me to almost abandon the Jack London Square Bev Mo during the five-cent wine sale, but that is a totally different story.

What is not a different story is the part where I pulled out the license and looked at it for the first time and said, “Wow…I look so tan!”

And The Mint Killer, who would know the difference between me happy and me sad, said, “You look happy.”

“Let’s look at the Iowa license,” I said, pulling it from my wallet. “Yeah – not so happy there.”

“It’s not that you don’t look happy there,” The Mint Killer said. “It’s that you look like you’re thinking, ‘What the hell am I in for?’ In this one,” (and she pointed at the California license…) “you look like you’re saying ‘I’m thrilled to be here.’”

“It’s the best license picture I have ever seen,” she said.

One quick programming note…I know there are a few (I don’t kid myself…there are not hundreds of people clamoring for my review…) people wondering when I’m going to post about Slow Food Nation. That’s coming, this week, but the event was much more complicated than I expected, and it’s going to take me some time to organize my thoughts in a way that makes sense and is fair to all. However, I’ve posted plenty of pretty pictures over on Flickr, if you’re in need of something to tide you over…

don’t worry Genie – we’ll be waiting patiently. Having spent probably about 10 hours on my own post (which only covered one SFN event), I certainly appreciate how long it will probably take you to write your own piece.

    good luck!

Aw, Genie. I know I wasn’t commenting so much when you were in Iowa, but I see the difference.

Sam, thanks for the good luck wishes. I loved your post — I can see how it took 10 hours of work! It’s a complicated subject…

Lydia, thanks — I was surprised — the guy didn’t even give me a preview when I was at the DMV, so I had no idea what I’d get when I opened that envelope.

Ree, ;-) right back at ya. California’s been really good to me so far. Not that Iowa wasn’t, but it was, well, complicated.
